Music

What style of music will you play? Can we request the music?

Birds of a Feather play a varied repertoire to appeal to all guests - old and young. We typically play a mix of jazz/soul/folk, and at the beginning of your event so that your guests have a chance to mingle without being dominated by sound.

Then, we are eager to energise the set by playing a range of funk, pop and rock. It's at the end of the night where we place the most importance, this is where you would want everyone up dancing and having a boogie to up tempo, well known tunes.

We are happy for you to leave the song decisions up to us as we are highly confident in creating the right atmosphere to ensure your event is memorable. However, if you have particular song requests then send them our way, bearing in mind the time frame between your requests and the event.

Please continue reading through FAQ to help your process of requesting music.

Travel

Are you willing to travel? If so, how far and are there extra costs involved?

Birds of a Feather are based in the CBD of Newcastle, NSW. We have played at weddings in Byron Bay, the Southern Highlands, the Mid North coast and the Hunter Region. Any event within 45 minutes of Newcastle CBD does not have an associated travel fee. However, beyond that, costs are added to cover travel time and fuel costs. Please get in contact to discuss specifics of travel quotes.

Setup

How does set up and sound check work?

On average we need 45 minutes to set up and do a sound check before we begin live music. You are not charged for this process. For instance, if you booked us for 5 hours (I.e.6pm to 11pm) we would arrive 5-5.15pm to set up. However, this is on the basis that your live music is set in one location and with access to electricity. If otherwise, we would need to talk specifics with you (we do have a portable speaker for off site ceremonies). You would also need to take into consideration our access to your venue, you may need to ask your venue host to allow us to arrive much earlier to set up and move our vehicle. We keep soundcheck to a minimum.

Booking Process

How does the booking process work?

If you’d like Birds of a Feather to perform at your next event whether that be wedding or corporate, you can get in touch with us using the contact form at the bottom of the homepage or packages page. On the form we ask you to include your contact details as well as an idea of what your vision is for the entertainment wanted at your event I.e. timeframe, location/s, style of music, and/or the package you’re interested in (check packages page for reference).

After initial contact, we are happy to work with you to make the right decisions to benefit your celebration.

Ceremonial Music

How do we choose our ceremonial music?

Prelude music

The first music your guests hear when they arrive at the ceremony. Birds of a Feather prelude music is ambient and instrumental so that your guests feel comfortable, and don’t feel the need to stop and listen.

Processional music

This is the music you choose to walk down the aisle to. We have plenty of uplifting and romantic song suggestions on our songlist, or request a song for them to play that resonates with your love story. Birds of a Feather Music are professional musicians who have an ‘ear’ for detail, and ensure that the section of music that you choose with them is played at the appropriate times. For instance, if you have several bridal party persons walk down the aisle before you, then Birds of a Feather will subtly and repeatedly loop or vamp the softer section of the song to save the most dramatic or bigger section of the song for when it’s your turn to walk down the aisle. This ensures that the music is appropriated to suit the atmosphere of anticipation & excitement.

Register Signing Music

Most of our couples choose an entertaining song for when you officially legalise the marriage. Considering your celebrant will sit you down to sign papers, and invite witnesses to this process, it isn’t the most exciting event to watch from the point of view of your guests. So, an acoustic guitar accompanying vocals would suit this event.

Recessional Music

This is the moment your guests are waiting for! You walk back down the aisle as newly weds as they clap and cheer (and probably throw some confetti at you). Choose uplifting, victorious music for this moment to suit the cheery atmosphere.
